Snow Storm, etc.

Mid-morning Christmas day it started snowing and we ended up with about 5 inches of snow.  It was beautiful, cold and windy and we just hibernated most of the weekend.  We had a wonderful Christmas with Amy and Sophie and loved Sophie's first Christmas.  Our son and his family didn't make it down though and the weather kept us from going there, so we are still waiting to have Christmas with them.

This is Sophie's first sled ride.  She loved the snow as long as she didn't have to get in it or get it on her!

Christmas morning......

Serving tea to Pooh at her new table and chairs

Helping granddaddy (with Santa's help) put together the race track.

 I love my Dora bag!
More tea!

She didn't know what to make of opening gifts at first, but learned quickly!

We're anxiously now awaiting the second round with the other granddaughters!

I don't think I ever posted pictures of the finished Bella's Mittens - they are a gift, but haven't been given yet.

I love the long mittens, so warm. Since I had a little extra time and and a little extra yarn, I found a pattern for a warm headband/ earwarmer and finished this to add to the mittens. It was a quick knit but turned out cute.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, a nice relaxing week, and then a Happy New Year!

First Snow

First snow of the year and first snow for Sophie (that we have seen her experience at least).  Yesterday started out as a beautiful winter day, but by early afternoon it had started to snow.  I really thought it would melt as it fell, and it did on the roads but we actually got about an inch of light, wet, fluffy snow.

Sophie started out very tentative, although she had been very interested watching it from the house.  Her mom didn't bring her boots so we didn't venture off the sidewalk, but she loved it.  Maybe next time there will be enough for her first snowman!

After we came inside, my other granddaughters called from Norfolk and it had started snowing there and they were so excited.  Hope they had enough to enjoy it!

I have to share this - before we went out into the snow, Sophie and I were in our bedroom and she opened a drawer where I have old scarves, gloves, and hats.  She loved it.  She tried on many and settled on these

Her mom says she is an accessories girl!  The top picture shows her touching the snow (which led to going outside).

Snow Again!

The weather report predicted we might get a dusting of snow today, and inch or less they said.  I didn't even think we would get that.  After all every time they have  predicted snow this year it actually snowed and I didn't think they could possibly continue their winning record.  Also.... we have had enough snow!

However, this was my drive home at 5:00 pm.

It is still snowing an hour later and it looks like we might have about 2 inches.  So far the roads are not covered but we'll see as dark and colder temperatures hit.  We are ready for spring!

We have snow!

Since we moved to Virginia 17 years ago, we have had several big snows, but they mostly happened in the 90's.  In the last few years, a lot of snow has been predicted, but often it is more prediction than reality.  Often, what little we get is gone by 10:00 am.

When they started predicting this winter blizzard earlier this week I was very skeptical, but for once they were right and I was wrong!  Hard to believe I know!

This was the view from from office window yesterday afternoon about 2:30.

And this was the view from my front door early this morning.

We got about a foot of snow and it has snowed some more during the day, but I think it is mostly over.  DH has a 4-wheel drive jeep and he was itching to try it out so he went out this morning to the store and I sent the camera with him.  These are shots he took of our street, driveway, our house and yard, and neighbor's house.

Another view from the front door.

All my life my mother was a person who did everything ahead of time.  I heard a million times, "You never know what might happen and I want to be ready."  She bought birthday cards way ahead of time and had them ready to mail months early, prepared early for every holiday, etc.  I used to laugh at her, but I guess some of it rubbed off on me in spite of everything because I feel stressed if I leave anything till the last minute.  Sometimes it actually pays off - like now.  I had finished my shopping, wrapping, and cards last weekend and thank goodness I did.  This weekend I would have freaked out if I had it all to do in this weather!

Today I cleaned and am making soup and plan later to knit! Of course I'm still thinking of things I would like to buy, but if I don't get out, nobody will know the difference.

We Have Snow!

After several years of missed predictions, we finally have some snow and it is beautiful. I love the way it coated the trees. It is fluffy, white and looks like it would be the best kind for a snowman.

These were the views from our front and back doors this morning.

I love the way it coated the tree limbs.

Beautiful blue sky........

Unfortunately I had to go to work and some of it is gone. The roads are pretty much clear, but very wet, and it is going to be cold tonight so I worry about tomorrow morning.
I know for everyone in the northeast, this was just another nuisance snow, but most everyone here was excited.

Birthday Snow

For readers from farther north, I know this is a pitiful amount of snow, and I know you are sick of snow anyway. However, we don't get much snow so humor me. Also, it is my birthday and I was thrilled to see snow this morning! Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get me out of work! I would have loved to stay home today, knit, and watch the inauguration! I hope to catch up tonight.

My friend Bonnie from work made delicious brownies for my birthday and gave me a beautiful red casserole dish. (I've developed a thing for red dishes.) We went out to eat last night for my birthday, and then DH cooked tonight and I got lovely gifts from him and daughter. Friday, we have to make a trip to Durham, NC to get fingerprints made (for daughter's adoption - it's a long story!) so we plan on a little shopping and eating out then too. You can see, I'm stretching out this birthday as long as possible!
